Officer: I don't mean to shed a bad light on my division, but it seems unfair that so many officers have died for speaking out against Kira while the lead investigator on the case, L, remains in private and out of reach. Immune to danger. We have families, and lives. We shouldn't be forced to take such risks alone.

[cut to another officer]

I intend to resign tomorrow morning.

The NPA has released the following statement in response:

While we understand and sympathize with the concerns of our officers, we have no control over the actions of L. Should problems continue to arise, we will consider severing our relationship with him. However, at this time, we consider his assistance to be crucial.

...in other news, chaos has erupted in the United States, as a major Los Angeles penitentiary suffers a criminal escape plan of massive proportions. Around an hour ago, inmates began to pour from the unlocked front gates. Many have been shot, while others have fled into the streets. It is not yet known who freed them or how, but--

Breaking news. It is believed that fires have erupted inside the penitentiary as well. I repeat, fires have broken out inside the prison. There are still guards inside. Other prisoners many still be inside as well. The cause of this event is still unknown. We will update you as information becomes available.

In recent weeks, the world has been preoccupied with what is being dubbed the "Kira" case: the mysterious deaths of convicted and accused criminals around the world. The rash of deaths are believed to have begun some two months ago with a number of mysterious deaths in the London area. The rate quickly accelerated over the next several weeks, culminating in a single day in which 100 criminals died internationally. This quickly resulted in a following for what many believe is a supernatural entity enacting God's judgment on the world, but two weeks ago the deaths stopped completely.

Today, they have begun again, with the deaths of approximately twelve criminals worldwide. The number is tentative, as reports are still coming in. However, the deaths have prompted an announcement from Interpol that a meeting will be held in four days to discuss how to approach and coordinate an international investigation into "Kira."

Currently, the death toll is believed to have reached approximately 600. However, an exact count is difficult due to the apparent cause of death: simple cardiac arrest.

The world was shocked today when dozens of convicted criminals all around the world died within minutes of one another. The final toll has not yet been reached, but as of now, there are believed to be over fifty convicts dead.

It happened a little over an hour ago, here at Maryland State Correctional Facility, where four time murderer Filiberto Cohagan was the first to die.

Guard: He suddenly just... started clutching his chest, you know? And then he started screaming and his eyes went all wide, and then he just... fell over. It was done, just like that.

Attempts to revive Cohagan failed. But that would not be the last loss of the day. Within minutes, four more inmates at Maryland State alone would be dead, along with dozens more around the world. Bangliu Bai, child molester and serial rapist/torturer, died within minutes of Cohagan. Some of the other, more well known confirmed deaths include Armand Kali - the Boston Bomber, Oscar Berge - the London strangler, Parisian Black Widow Valentine LaFosse, and Michishige Kumiko - Tokyo's Loli Killer. Many nations have not yet reported any deaths, but it is unknown whether this means that they have not experienced any.

Tentatively, coroners place the most likely cause for each of the deaths as a heart attack. However, no definite conclusion can be reached until autopsies are performed. This should be within the next few days.

Natalie Crow: This is Natalie Crow, reporting from the alleyway where the body of infamous underworld figure Jack Barton was found only minutes ago, dead, apparently from bullet wounds to the stomach and chest. Police have yet to determine the time of death, but it is believed the body had been moved.

Barton was found by local Dalia Morris.

Dalia Morris: I was just walking my dog, right? And I see this foot just sticking out from behind a bloody dumpster. At first I thought it was some sleeping vagrant, but the shoes... they didn't look like shoes you've got on a vagrant. I just started yelling for the police.

Rachel Crow: Barton's death is suspected to be the result of rivalries within the underground. However it is too early to state anything to a certainty.

Due to recent developments in the case we will be forced to take an even more aggressive approach to investigating Asakawa Megumi. To this end, I recommend that we install bugging devices in her apartment. Since your son has already volunteered himself for surveillance, it would be best to have him in charge of this operation. I would also like to assign several officers in shifts to keep her under observation at all times when she is away from her residence, if it is possible with your resources. Please let me know if this is a problem, and I may be able to arrange something, but remember that time is of the essence. It is difficult to know when she will strike next.

I would also like to inform you that I am no longer considering Asakawa our primary suspect. From now on she will be handled as an accomplice in this crime. I believe that the second killer is the one guiding her movements and not the other way around. As such, I would like to expand our research efforts to include known criminals with a history of orchestrating large-scale crimes, especially those that would have had access to the public within the last two months.

After rummaging around in many dark rooms and talking to many people as well as doing a lot of research, I have uncovered the mysterious truth about Yahari and Matsuoka!

It's a little weird to mention this, but I think that they were involved. Romantically involved! Secretly, or I guess not as secretly as they could have been, but I did not know about it, since I am not from their division. This is the reason for Yahari's many conflicts with his wife, and I believe they were contemplating divorce at the time of his death.

Since I know you are looking for a link between Yahari and Asakawa, I decided it would make sense to look for a link between Asakawa and Matsuoka as well! This uncovered the news that Matsuoka was the primary officer involved in an investigation of Asakawa's assault several years ago. He made some kind of error which resulted in the perpetrator being released on a technicality of some kind. I don't know why this would make Asakawa kill Yahari instead of Matsuoka, but maybe this will make sense to you, great L!
